Rail-fan Pictures in Bucksport

The paper mill that used to operate here is shut down and has been redeveloped into a bio-matter to electrical power recycling plant with no rail service needed. However I was down there one day to see how the redevelopment was going and came across the Bucksport Depot.

The rail line to Bucksport was built as a joint effort of the town and the European and North American Railway. Construction began in 1870 and the first locomotive arrived by ship in 1874 because the line was built to a three foot gauge and the European and North American was 4' 8". The line was almost immediatly leased by the European and North American then 5 years later the Mortgage Trustees bought it at the sherrif's sale. They would run the line as the Bucksport and Bangor Railroad Company until the Maine Central took out a 999 year lease in 1884 and changed the gauge to 4' 8".
